May all you wishes come true!
Good¬†morning dear readers…
Winter has finally come to the southland. We woke up this morning to temperatures in the 30’s and frost on the cars.
I’ve been busier than a one armed paper hanger these past few weeks. I’ve been preparing for an art and craft¬†show that I participated in yesterday at the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia. I’ve also been trying to finish up¬†the painting series for my last class which ends Thursday. I’ll finally be graduating on the 18th. Yay! I’ll be happy for the break from school and teaching so I can concentrate on my own art for a few weeks.
On Sat. I participated in a home show as a warmup for the show at the art center. To go along with the other books I had I made a bunch of Chameleons.
For the home show my friend Holly and I setup our wares in the master bedroom closet. Here is a photo of some of the Chameleons on a shelf.
My book tree.
Chameleons at the CACV show.
Sales overall at the show were pretty slow. I sold a few Chameleons and some cards and books but not as much as I was hoping for. I think it’s the economy. People aren’t spending as much this year. I would definately participate in the show again as it’s a great space and has great organizers.
Another thing that I’m¬†really excited about is one of my holiday presents. I purchased a used camcorder that takes excellent video. This means that I’ll be able to put together some simple bookbinding tutorial videos for the site as well as create videos that will accompany¬†the¬†new book I’m working on.
Well…I’m off to enjoy some homemade buttermilk bisquits with sausage gravy on this chilly Dec. morning.
I hope everyone has a great day.
I recently had the great fortune to aquire an enormous¬†cowhide. This¬†leather is a thick durable upholstery grade leather with¬†a soft “buttery” feel and is a beautiful¬†chocolate brown color¬†with a light texture to the surface.
I am offering a special Chameleon for the holidays that is made with this leather.  The special Chameleon comes with your choice of a color combo, two slash pockets (one front , one back), a black ribbon pen loop and two plain paper pamphlets for $42.00. Your Chameleon arrives packaged in a custom cloth bag.
As a holiday bonus you also get shipping within the continental US free. (International customers get $6.00 off your shipping charge.)
These special Chameleons would make a great holiday gift for yourself or someone you love.
For more information or to order your special holiday Chameleon, please see my Chameleon ordering page.
Good morning readers.
Anyone have plans for an Ark available? We are experiencing a nor’easter. When we do, they do more damage than the hurricanes that come through. It has been raining here for three days and there is flooding and people being evacuated from their homes all over the place. I am not planning to leave the house today if at all possible. It’s a good day for staying in and working on projects.
If anyone is looking for a bookbinding press, there is an auction on Ebay which ends in a few hours for a sturdy looking wooden press. So far there are no bids on it.
My latest album making workshop was a success. I had two students come to learn the art of flush mount album making. Both left with a good understanding of the process and two completed albums.
I hope everyone has a great (and dry) day.
Good evening readers…
I just had to stop by share my Craigslist find. A local lady was getting rid of some leather that she no longer wanted. About 30+ pounds of it. There are about 8 large skins of various colors as well as two plastic bags of fairly decent sized scraps. Most of them large enough for book covers. She used to make purses and bags so the leather is good quality and a great weight for books.
Good morning readers…
The weather has finally dipped into cold temperatures here in the southland. Not quite to freezing yet but there was a bit of frost on the grass this morning. I know some of our neighbors to the north got some snow at the beginning of the week. While I think a little snow would be nice, it always makes things crazy out on the roads here. I hope we don’t see any here until January/February.
For the album makers among you…I have found that Framing Supplies Plus no longer has the best price on the 3M adhesive rolls. Back in June the price was $25.84 for an 11″x50′ roll an d when I went to reorder last night the price had jumped to $52.95 per roll. I understand that they were probably not making much profit at all on a roll but to double the price in four months is kind of crazy. I did send them an email asking if the price was correct. We’ll see what they say.
In the mean time, searching the Internet, I found several places¬†that offer¬†reasonable it at prices. Adorama Camera offers an 11″x50′ roll for $39.00. Depending on where you live shipping for 2 rolls is around $10 or so. Hillas¬†offers it at $34.67 per roll but you have to buy 6 at a time. Also, M&M Distributors offers it for $36.95 per roll with no minimum. Don’t know what the shipping would be.
I have done business with Adorama but not the other two companies so I can’t tell you anything about shipping or customer service.
Good morning readers.
It’s definately fall here in the southland. The weather is cool and clear and the morning sky¬†has a¬†beautiful glow to it.
I am frequently asked by photographers if they know of any binders in their area who would be willing to work with them to create custom albums for their clients as they want something unique. I have a few binders that I can reccommend but some photographers would prefer to work with someone closeby that they can meet with in person.
I have decided to revamp my photographers resource page to include a list of binders who are interested in working with photographers in their area to create custom wedding albums, guestbooks, boxes etc. for their clients. The list will be by setup by country/state and will be a free resource for both binders and photographers.
If interested in being listed, please email me for more details.
Also, there are only a few more spaces left for my Flush Mount Album workshop. It’s a great opportunity to learn the process in a hands on workshop setting.
Since I had so many lovely responses to my post, I decided to giveaway two of my little canvas books. I put all the names on pieces of paper and had my lovely assistant Terri draw for me.
Drumroll please……brrrrrrrrrrrrr… and the winners are…….
Please email me your snail mail addy and I’ll get them right out to you.
about my Grandma’s age. She is not 98, she’s 99 today. Besides her eyesight, she gets around pretty well. I don’t get to see her nearly as much as I should being that she is only a couple of hours away.
Just wanted to remind everyone¬†the little book giveaway. Just post a comment about your favorite¬†fall traditions¬†on my giveaway post¬†for your chance to win. I’ll be picking a winner when I get home from class this evening. (About 9:00 PM eastern US time.) Good luck to everyone!
Also, there are only a couple more spaces available in my upcoming Flush Mount Binding workshop and retreat. You do not need to have any binding experience to participate. We will work from the ground up. You can also bring a non-student guest to stay with you at the retreat. They can hang out and relax, take a walk on the beach or check out some of the local attractions while you are in the workshop.
Good afternoon readers.
I’ve been pondering my next foray into the world of bookbinding tutorial writing and am wondering what is the best medium to use for it’s creation. I’m considering some video tutorials instead of ones that can be printed.
So, my question to you dear readers is do you learn better from books or videos? I’m a book person myself. I enjoy watching videos but don’t like having to go put the video in and find a certaing part when I am working on a project. I prefer to have a book or some type of printed instructions to hand when I need them.
Also, what do you think about online classes as opposed to being in a classroom with an instructor?
Don’t forget¬†to add a¬†comment about fall traditions¬†on my giveaway post¬†for your chance to win a cool little journal.¬†If I get more than 20 posts I’ll giveaway two so your chances will be greater.
