Wednesday morning musings…

Filed under: Inspiration, Morning Musings — jackie @ 9:50 am

Good morning readers.

It’s rainy here this morning. Yeah! My grass is actually growing. It’s nice to look out at the lawn and see a bit of green instead of brown.

A few resources…

A site that has a little calculator to pair adhesives to the surfaces you are working with.

The National Preservation Office of the British Library has some useful PDF leaflets on book preservation.

Ever wanted to make yourself a big ol’ Grimoire? A really unique journal? Or maybe just something different than a plain old notebook? Here’s a few sites that will give you some inspiration.

Brahm’s Bookworks has some great looking tomes with handwrought metal furniture.

Jase’s Books also has some cool books with metal decorations as well as some that have intricately carved cover designs.

Most of the big books are made with a post and screw type, or similar, binding so that pages can be taken out, reorganized and put back in easily. Here’s a great photo that shows the structure.

The bands on the spine are of course false bands, either made out of strips of leather or binders board. You could make them out of heavy cord if you wanted something more rounded looking.

For the furniture, you could craft your corner pieces or cover decorations out of polymer clay. I’ve seen some really detailed work done this way.  I’m not sure how they would hold up as latches but you could do something using brass or metal hinges. Or leather and bone. I always find a quick trip to the hardware store gives me inspiration. :D

If you’d like to learn leather carving, go to this site for some great tutorials.

I’m not the magical type per say but I do like to work a little magic in the kitchen. I was thinking about making something like this to keep all my recipes in. The nice thing would be I could type them up on the computer and print the pages out and insert them into the book. Then if they got messy or needed revisions, I could replace them. I’ll add that one to my list of 5000 and some projects already on it. 8O

I hope everyone has a wonderfully magical day.

  1. I’ve e-mailed Jase from Jase’s Books about my own design - turns out that most of the books on his site have hand stitched pages and you stumbled across one of the very few that uses brass posts for binding. I agree with the detail for the leather caving - WOW!
