Sunday morning coffee and musings…

Filed under: Boxes, Morning Musings — jackie @ 8:26 am

Good morning readers.

It’s overcast here in Va. Beach this morning. Hopefully it won’t turn into rain as it’s the last day of the Boardwalk Art Show.

I started work on a new guide yesterday. It will be a companion guide to my Flush Mount Guide on custom box making. I’ll let you know more in the coming weeks.

So, to get you started with box making, here are a few sites with information on the process:

How to make an Origami box This could actually be make bigger and use it as a presentation box.

A cute YouTube Video on making an Origami box.

Mirkwood Designs has a nice page with folded box instructions.

How to make a corrugated clamshell box These would be good for packaging album or books to give to clients. I imagine they could be made out or corrugated cardboard.

Here’s another set of instructions for a corrugated clamshell box from Cornell University.

A really nice PDF file on clamshell box construction.

A good step by step clamshell box tutorial from the Indiana University Libraries.

Not full details but Laura Pope Robbins has a good overview of the clamshell box process  on her blog. This site is def. worth spending a little time surfing around on as these is alot of other good information on bookbinding in her posts.

A few very good books worth mentioning:

Boxes for the Protection of Rare Books: Their Design&Construction (LC publications on conservation of library materials) by Don Etherington. This is a great book but hard to find. You might be able to find a copy in your local library.

Books, Boxes & Portfolios: Binding, Construct and Design, Step-By-Step by Franz Zeier

Making Memory Boxes: Box Projects to Make, Give, and Keep by Barbara Mauriello

I hope everyone has a great day.

  1. Here’s another variation on the origami box:
    http://www.greggman.com/japan/origami-bowl/origami-bowl.htm

I learnt this while in Taiwan. Everyone had them in their kitchens.
They used junk mail to make the boxes. I made a series of them into book boxes
and used a variety of Taiwan papers from junk mail to decorative warpping papers.
Inside each box I placed a chuncky square book . All in red for good luck.
I’ve got images of these on my website: http://www.joannebkaar.com go to Inspiration and then red!
