Thursday morning musings…

Filed under: General, Mailbag — jackie @ 9:55 am

Good morning readers.

It is raining and cool here in Virginia Beach this morning after several days of sunshine and warm breezes. It’s a good day for bread baking. I love to bake bread. I’m looking forward to the day that I can have a clay oven in my backyard. I’ll be making honey whole wheat loaves this morning. :)

Yesterday, in the mailbox was a copy of the video The Atlas from the Bookbinding with Peter Goodwin series from Janette Heffernen. Janette produced all the Peter Goodwin bookbinding videos as well as one of her own on DIY video making (which I recently ordered).

Video seems to be the way of the future for alot of the information sharing. I’m considering making a few videos to go along with my tutorials. I am a visual person myself so photos and drawings that go along with written instructions have always helped me when learning a new technique. Taking classes was even better because I could actually see the technique being performed but I still had to take notes and try to remember what the teacher showed us once I got home.

So…I’m curious to know what you all think. Do you prefer to learn from written manuals with pictures or would a video be more helpful for you in learning? Or perhaps both? Please comment below.

I haven’t had a chance to view the whole video The Atlas yet but I’ll post a full review once I do.

I hope everyone has a great day.

  1. I prefer written instructions combined with clear diagrams AND photographs, when possible. I learn best when there is someone physically with me to show me and walk me through the process, so you’d think videos would be helpful for me - but they just don’t do it for me.

  2. I’m all for written instructions and diagrams too. It’s how I’ve learned most things. Give me a good manual, and I can learn just about anything. But I think for coptic stitch bindings I may need some hands-on instruction. There’s always an exception to the rule.
