Monday morning musings and books in movies…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 6:27 am

Good morning readers.

Some of you are probably wondering what happened to the weekly surf report. I took a play day Saturday. I went out for lunch and spent some time at our local Guitar Center playing around with the guitars and drums and listening to a group of young guys play the heck out of the keyboards that were on display.

In the afternoon I watched the Movie The Ninth Gate. While the movie is no great cinematic feat what caught my interest was that it was centered around a rare book and a rare book called The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows and the dealers quest to find the 3 surviving copies and validate thier authenticity. Johnny Depp plays kind of an Indiana Jones of the rare book world. Of course along the way folks get killed and books get destroyed and a mysterious woman appears and helps him in his quest. There are also lots of old books and a scene in a really quirky bookbinders shop in Madrid. You can read a full plot synopsis at the above link.

Speaking of movies with an emphasis on interesting books, Prosperos Books is another movie that comes to mind as a movie that is based on books. (Can you tell I like books?) While the movie is a bit of a snoozer the scenes with the animated books are way cool. I understand the British artist Tom Phillips made the tomes for the film. Def. worth the $4 rental fee to see the books. If anyone knows where to find a DVD of this movie shoot me an email as it only seems to come in VHS here.

Have you ever seen a book that was a movie prop and wished you could have a copy of your own?

If you would like to make your own copy of The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows from the movie The Ninth Gate check out this link for some tutorials as well as text and illustration files you can print for the insides.

From the movie Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade a whole cult following has emerged based on recreating copies of Indiana Jones’ fathers Holy Grail diary. Check out the site IndyGear for lots and lots of photos and information on creating a copy of your own.

The Book of Shadows from the TV series charmed is another book that folks try to recreate. I’ve seen copies for sale with the full text and illustrations.

One of my favorite things to do is take the covers from old (non valuable books) and gut them and add blank paper inside. I know, some folks think it is blasphemous to do but some of the books are kind of arcane and the titles make for great journal titles.

If anyone knows of any movies with cool books in them leave a comment and let me know as I’m compiling a list.

I hope everyone has a great day.

  1. I just re-viewed The English Patient, a great book-movie. How about the spell book in Practical Magic? And don’t the Harry Potter movies (which I can’t bear to watch) have cool books in them?

  2. How about “Bridget Jones Diary”!
