Morning musings…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 8:44 am

Good morning readers.

It’s sunny and a bit chilly here in Virginia Beach this morning. I was hoping for a little bit of spring like weather before summer overtakes us. The weatherman says rain for later this afternoon. :(

This morning on another book site someone was asking about ways to decorate leather.

The technique of Pyrography (burning in the designs) is one good way to get intricate designs onto leather. Here is a site with some examples of celtic designs burned onto leather. A  book that looks like it might be helpful in learning the technique is Learning the Art of Pyrography by Al Chapman.

Another great technique is carving or incising the design into the leather. I’ve mentioned this site before. It has great examples and tutorials for leather carving.

On another site, halfway down this page are some cool examples of a combination of burning and carving.

What’s nice about both of these techniques is that you can start out with a minimal amount of tools. You can get a woodburning set at both Michaels and AC Moore and get 40% off with thier weekly coupons. I also think you can get burning tools that are oriented towards leather work.

I’m thinking about trying the burning since I saw a great example of a period binding with a burned in design on this site.

I hope everyone has a great day and that wherever you are you are dry and warm.
