Tuesday morning musings…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 7:20 am

Good morning readers…

A big thank you to everyone that has bought something from my virtual yard sale. It’s much appreciated. There’s still some items left and I’m continuing my project of mucking out the studio and adding things. It seems to be taking forever.

So…I have a question for you Etsy sellers. How to you deal with the rising cost of postage when sending items out of the country? It’s been a while since I sent anything weighing more than a couple of pounds outside the US and was dismayed to find that if the package is over 4 pounds you automatically have to send it Priority mail which starts at $22 and goes way up depending on where it’s going.

I love Priority flat rate envelopes for international mailing because I’ve been able to stuff all kinds of things in there keeping the postage at around $15 but I’ve had to use tape to keep them closed in some instances and got a lecture about that at the post office the other day. :( Normally I don’t give them to the person behind the desk but I had other packages to mail. Good thing it already had a label and postage on it or she may not have taken it. (Edited to add that the package made it safely to it’s destination overseas and wasn’t confiscated at the border for having packing tape hold it together…apparently one has to use only the adhesive supplied on the flap.)

Unfortunately, because of the high cost of postage, I’ve had to rethink things like giveaways and absorbing postage costs on items that I sell. I certainly don’t want to leave out folks from other countries when offering items but I don’t want to go broke because of postage costs either.

I don’t know about you all but my summer has flown by. In less than three weeks the fall semester starts at school.  I’m looking forward to the classes but not the commute as it’s a 20 min drive that can take up to an hour depending on the traffic. The road I usually take has also been under construction forever and it seems to have gotten worse. I may have to rethink my route. Gas has also gotten more expensive but I am only going to one campus this year so that helps a bit.

Of note…

Someone on another list that I am on posted this quote and I thought I would share with you.

“The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower,
Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”
Kurt Vonnegut from A Man without a Country

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!
