A little retrospection…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 12:33 pm

Good morning readers.

I have a beef brisket marinating in the fridge, black eyed peas cooking in the crockpot and a batch of herb cheese daisies cooling on the rack in preparation for a New Year’s Eve feast at a friend’s house.

As the end of the old and beginning of the new year approaches I find myself thinking alot about the past year and all new people I have met and things that I have done.

I have made so many new friends over the past year from all over the world. (Isn’t the Internet an amazing thing?)

I want to thank all of you that have come to visit my little site. Those that have come and stayed, returning whenever I post no matter how meager it is. Those of you that come back every once in a while just to see what I am up to and those of you who are here for the first time.

I appreciate all the comments and encouragement that I have gotten throughout the year. Those posted on the site as well as those sent to me personally.  Knowing that you all appreciate my efforts makes it all so much sweeter.

I hope you all have a safe and wonderful New Year’s celebration.

See you in 2008!

Sunday musings…

Filed under: Morning Musings, stuff to buy — jackie @ 5:13 pm

Good afternoon readers.

Murphy’s law is in full swing today. Now that Christmas is over I am finding alot of cool ideas for gifts to make. Guess I’ll just have to save them for next year or special occassions such as birthdays, etc.

It’s been pretty quiet here since Christmas. Tommorrow I’ll be cooking snacks and food for a New Year’s Eve dinner.

A couple of things…

In preparation for the New Year and the “cleaning out fest” I am hoping to have this week, here is a nice article on stuff and how we accumulate it.

Through another blog I discovered a site called Cool Tools that reviews nifty little tools that people might find useful. One of the tool reviews on there was for a Mini Booklet Stapler. What book or zine maker doesn’t need one of these?

Mini Booklet Stapler

Need a cover for your full size Moleskine journal? Gfeller Casemakers is now offering a leather cover. Here’s a link to an article about them.

If you like to sew your own journaling accessories, here’s a quick and easy pencil bag tutorial. You could even sew this by hand if you don’t have a machine.

Here’s an interesting technique for decorating those Moleskine Cahiers or even your homemade versions.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Post holiday musings…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 11:59 am

Good morning readers.

I am back from my travels and holiday merriment making. I am looking forward to the start of a New Year and all the possibilities that it brings. I have been dilligently working on my “goals” list and will share them with you on the 1st.

For all you local readers, I have updated my class schedule with my upcoming classes for Winter 2008.

For everyone else, I have a few new bookbinding tutorials in the works and I am planning on updating a few of the older ones. Stay tuned.

While on my break from school I have a few projects that I’d like to work on. Cleaning the house is the biggest one and another is making a bag similar to the one that was worn by Jennifer Garner in the movie Catch and Release. I have been sketching out plans and am thinking about making one out of heavy canvas with leather trim instead of full leather like the one in the movie. I’m hoping my Craigslist find old heavy duty sewing machine can handle the canvas. We’ll see.

While we are on the subject of bags…remember those two Crumpler bags that I got the good deal on? I didn’t mention it before but I got them for $15 dollars each. I think someone made a mistake when pricing them because the price went up the next day. They made good on the sale though. I was worried the company might cancel my order but they didn’t. Because of it I will def. buy stuff from them in the future. It was one of those “being at the right place at the right time” moments. I have to say though, that even at the higher $30 price they were a great deal and I noticed today that they have no more available. I hope some of you readers got yourself one of those deals before they were gone.

Before I go, I’ll show you a little collaboration between my Mom and myself. She painted the cover and I bound it. The covers are canvas boards and the spine is paper made with that cool painted brown paper technique.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Just a few more days…

Filed under: Morning Musings, stuff to buy — jackie @ 10:21 am

Good morning readers.

I am feeling in the holiday spirit this week before Christmas, so I put up a festive banner for you all. I’m almost finished with my gift shopping. One more item to get for my Mom and a few stocking stuffers and that’s it. I feel like such a slacker as I didn’t have the time this year to hand make any of my gifts but hopefully I can be a bit more prepared next year. Because… you know that I plan on being more {{shudder}} organized in 2008. :)

While I was poking around the website of a local chain store looking for holiday gifts I came across a great deal on a Crumpler Messenger bag. For that person in your life who is a bagaholic…check out the Blue Ridge Mountain Sports Website.

They have two diff. bags on sale for about 30 bucks each. Which is a really great price considering they usually go for three times more. The bag models are the Barney Rustle and the Complete Seed. You have to take the color bag that is available but for the price it really doesn’t matter. You can read more about them on the Crumpler Site. I have been wanting one for a long time but my pocket book hasn’t ever allowed spending a hundred bucks on a bag, though I’ve been tempted once or twice.

Being the bag wench that I am, I ordered one of each because I wasn’t sure which size I wanted. I figure I can use the larger one for school and the smaller one for everday use.

What’s cool about these bags is that you can purchase a removable photo insert that holds your camera gear so there is no need for an additional camera bag. (Did I actually say I didn’t need a bag?)

More from the non bookbinding front… I am thinking of possibly knitting a few last minute gift items. Probably just a hat  and slippers. Both can be knit up in a few hours of evening. We’ll see. :)

I hope everyone has a great day.

Filed under: What Was I Thinking — jackie @ 12:25 pm

The time for my demo at Jerry’s Artarama today is NOT 11-2 as I first reported. It’s actually 1-4pm today. I normally demo on Sat. and got the time confused. They don’t even open until noon on Sundays. Sorry about that. :(

If you’re in the area, please stop by and say “hiâ€?. I’m bringing a few little gifts to give out to those who do as well as Lotus Star Book instruction sheets. Jerry’s also gives a discount on bookbinding supplies and those fancy papers while I’m there.

Hope to see a few folks there on this windy rainy Sunday.

Cool stuff…

Filed under: Inspiration, Morning Musings — jackie @ 3:35 pm

Good afternoon readers…

Check out these journal shells and wraps by Sue Bleiweiss. I’ve made book covers similar to these as gifts for friends in the past. Sue’s unique covers have definitly sparked my interest in making some again. She has tutorials for a wrap and a padfolio here.

I’ve been playing with ideas for a scketchbook cover that holds my pens and pencils. I really like this book by Jenny Gunter but it’s a shame that the insides aren’t replaceable as you can’t use the pencil case on another book once the pages are filled.

I hope everyone is finding a little time to relax during this crazy holiday season.

Good morning readers…

I am finally finished with exams and can concentrate on the Holidays and upcoming new year. Which, besides finishing up things on my gift list, includes a good house cleaning and writing out my “goals” for next year.

Some of those “goals” are to start making more books to sell and to get my Etsy shop in order. I feel like such a slacker after seeing all the books Rhonda made recently. {sigh}

For anyone local, I’ll be at Jerry’s Artarama this Sunday Dec. 16 from 11-2 demoing. If you’re in the area, please stop by and say “hi”. As an extra incentive, I have a few little gifts to give out to those who do. And, if that wasn’t enough, they give a discount on bookbinding supplies and those fancy papers while I’m there. :)

I hope everyone has a great day.

The final push and a few musings…

Filed under: Inspiration, Morning Musings — jackie @ 10:53 am

Good morning readers…

Just two more days of classes and studying for finals and then I’ll have a few weeks break before jumping into school head first again at the beginning of the year.

I started a bit of holiday baking last night. I made two batches of cranberry almond biscotti and this morning I am preparing the dough for Stollen, which is a type of yeast bread made with nuts and candied fruit.  I used to bake tons of cookies but now I just bake breads and biscotti’s. Though I have been tempted by the cookie recipes delivered to my inbox from the Food Network this past week.

(Please note that the gratuitous mention of baked goods was for Diane and Clara. :) )

I’ve been doing a bit of reflecting recently and I found this quote on another blog and thought it very apropo as we leave one year an embark on a new one.

Discipline is remembering what you want.
- David Campbell

The biggest complaint I hear from my artist friends is that they don’t have the discipline to sit down and work on their art on a daily basis. That they are “too busy” doing daily chores or talking with friends or running errands or…

I am certainly guilty of this too. When you work for someone else you have no choice but to be there or not get paid. When you work for yourself you choose to work because if you don’t you won’t make any money.

A few years ago I stopped making New Year’s resolutions. I now call them “goals for the new year”. I found that calling them resolutions made it more stressful as it’s alot easier to try and make your goals than to keep resolutions.

With school added into the mix for the coming year I am really going to have to work at being more disciplined as well as {{{shudder}}} more organized.

I will be formulating my goals for the new year in the coming weeks and will share them with you on the first in hopes that announcing them to the world it will keep me on the path to fulfilling them. :)

I hope everyone has a great day.

A couple of things…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 2:08 pm

Good afternoon readers…

A couple of things…

If you are in the local area and are interested in making a few last minute gifts for people on your holiday list, I will be teaching a class this Sunday at Jerry’s Artarama in Virginia Beach. The class is from 1-4 and we will be making little super simple ribbon hinged albums and as a special holiday treat, we’ll also make the lotus star books. There’s plenty of space left in the class so if you’re interested, give them a call to get put on the list. Also, don’t forget that you get a discount on supplies the day of the class so you can stock up.

The Etsy Street Team is hosting a holiday sale. Each member is offering a discount or freebie with your holiday purchase. Check out their site for more information.

I hope everyone has a great day.
