Into the home stretch…

Filed under: Morning Musings, online tutorials — jackie @ 11:38 am

Good morning readers…

I don’t know about you, but I am never prepared for the onslaught of the holidays. Every year I say that I am going to prepare early and every year I am still preparing things and making/buying gifts at the last minute.

I bought a little book a few years ago titled Hundred Dollar Holiday: The Case For A More Joyful Christmas by Bill McKibben. The message being, of course, about scaling back and enjoying the holidays and the people more than the things. I bought it several years ago at one of those big book sales that they put on in empty storefronts during the holidays. I wish I had picked up a bunch of extra copies to give to family and friends.

I’m in the home stretch with my first semester of college. One more week then exams. Luckily I will only have two to study for but unfortunately they are both on the same day. I’m looking forward to the break as I plan to do a major pre new year clean with lots of organizing and purging of stuff.

On the bookbinding front, there has been some discussion about book presses over on the Book Arts Mailing list. There are a few places that you can get a good handmade book press at a reasonable cost.

One place is, Wood and Metal Craft. They have some nice looking presses for bookbinding and paper arts. They also have a few unique looking tools for binders that you may want to check out. I really like the natural handled awls.

Many of the tools that we use are easily built at home. If you are looking to build a press yourself, here are a few links to help you out.

I have some instructions for making a simple portable press on my guides page.

Here’s a book press tutorial from the tutorials section of the Book Arts List.

Another one that utilizes a bottle jack that is not so portable but easily buildable.

And another bottle jack press that is a little more detailed but still easily buildable.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day.
