Hardware store find…

Filed under: Hardware store finds — jackie @ 2:21 pm

So when I was leaving to run a few errands this afternoon I noticed that my neighbor had one of these sitting beside his garage.

 Black & Decker Workmate

Now being the resourceful person that I am it occurred to me that you could easily adapt it for bookbinding purposes. Think lying press substitute. It’s the perfect tool to hold your book block while you are glueing up your spine or sewing a headband. Add a pair of backing boards and you can round and back your books with no problem. Nice thing about the workmate is that it can be used for other things also and folds up for transport or storage.

This is the basic no frills model that can be found for under $45.00 US. They always seem to go on sale at the big box hardware stores around the holidays. There are fancier versions available that are shown on the Black and Decker website. Also, keep a look out when passing yard sales as I’ve seen them for a couple of dollars.

Dear mother nature…

Filed under: Morning Musings — jackie @ 7:44 am

Stop being such a big tease. I thought you had sent fall here to stay for a while but my local news person told me last night that the temperatures would get up into the 90’s this weekend. How could you do this to me? Just when I had settled into fall cooking and was planning on pulling out the wool sweaters and boots. I was even contemplating getting the Martha Stewart Halloween issue at the newsstand. I’m so gullible.

Dissappointed in Virginia

Good morning readers.

It seems that crafters everywhere are gearing up for fall shows and holiday sales. Etsy and web shops are filling up in anticipation of holiday sales. Handcrafts are definately alive and well. For those of you that participate in fall shows, how are your sales going? Are buyers still being frugal with their money? Or are people starting to see the value in purchasing handmade items over items from the big box stores?  I’m gearing up for a show the first weekend in November so I’m curious what those of you who have already done some fall shows are experiencing.

Flickr bookbinding sets…Every so often I do a search on “bookbinding” on Flickr to see what comes up and as a way to get inspired to work on my own books. Of course my searches always come up with some awesome examples of hand bound books. Here are a few of my favorites from my most recent search.

I hope everyone has a great day.
