Good morning all.

I hope everyone survived the annual “Day of Love”  I made it through this year without going into a chocolate comma. :o

As I have mentioned before, I spend a little time surfing around the Net looking for a bit of inspiration to start my day. I do have a few blogs that I like to check daily because they usually have interesting posts. Most of the blogs that I read are design or graphic arts related. The only bookbinding related blog I read regularly is the one from Rag and Bone Bindery. If you get a chance, def. surf on over and check out their blog and the lovely books they create. One of the reasons that I mention them this morning is that in one of their posts they mentioned this article which talks about letter writing. Which of course made me think about one of my all time favorite books. It’s Gift of a Letter by Alexandra Stoddard. If you don’t have a copy of this lovely little book treat yourself today. I’ve had my copy since 1990 and would be lost without it. In a nutsheel Ms. Stoddard talks about the dying art of letter writing. When she wrote this book email and the Internet were in their infancy. Now with email being readily available to every man, woman and child handwritten letters seem to be going the way of the letterpress. Used mainly as an art form.

If you pick up a copy of this book you will be motivated to write a letter. From this book I contracted the deadly fountain pen collecting disease. (I can’t tell you how many pens I have, it’s a secret.) I also started reading/collecting books of letters by famous people and started lusting after good papers and stationary. I even had my Dad make me a custom wooden lap letter writing desk. (photos to come)

One of my favorite parts of this book is her Grace Notes. Little bits of wisdom and ideas at the end of each chapter. She even published a book of them.

Alexandra Stoddard has written many books on living your life beautifully. I have several of those but this little book is the one I keep coming back to year after year when I want a little inspiration.

Gift of a Letter

Cherry scones with butter, hot tea, a Waterman Fountain pen, nice stationary and The Gift of a Letter. The perfect way to start a morning!
