It’s scarey how dependent I have become on having Internet access. Occassionally our service will go out (for mysterious reasons unknown) and when it does I feel really lost. This morning was one of those times. I tried to keep myself busy with other things but I felt so disconnected.

Here are a few photos of a guestbook that I recently created for a photographer friend of mine for one of his clients. It has a really elegant red fabric with an embossed heart pattern on it. I have used the fabric in the past for another project and had enough left over for a few smaller projects. The book looks much more elegant in person.

Here is a closeup of the cover fabric. It’s still hard to see the hearts in the photo.

An inside spread…

I wanted something different for the endpages so I created some by sandwiching a layer of Japanese tissue with plain white paper and left the deckle edge of the tissue hand over the paper edge slightly.

A few years ago I wrote a little booklet on making Polaroid image transfers. I use it regularly as a handout when I teach my classes. Even though it’s not a book arts technique, it is another tool in the box for creating visual journals so I have reformatted it and have to made it available on my free tutorials page.  Enjoy!

So…I was digging around in some old files looking for some specific pictures and found these photos of a custom book I made many years ago. It was commissioned by a friend’s husband for said friend as a holiday present. The binding is leather and fox fir (the fox fir was from a road kill) with a metal and antler closure. The box is custom made to look like a cigar box. It is padded and lined in velvet. If I recall correctly, the book size is about 5″X6″ or so.

Of note…

The site of Estonian Leather Artists Association is not in english but if you click on the name of each artist most of them will have some great examples of some books done in unique leather bindings along with their info.

Just stopped in to show off a custom flushmount album that I put together for another photographer here locally.

The album is approx 8″x10 in size and 20 pages. The cover fabric is a silky nylon in a shiny coppery color with embroidered flowers. The endsheets are a dark goldish color. The headbands are made out of the same fabric as the cover. The bag is a sheer version of the cover fabric and was custom made for the book.

    

Over the next few days I thought I’d post some photos of books I created in the past.

This one was a commissioned piece. It’s appox. 6″x8″ in size and is made of leather, fur, bone and metal. The inside pages are blank. The box with it is a custom made, velvet lined “cigar box” for the book to be stored in.
