Friday musings and the great pumpkin…

Filed under: Morning Musings, Recipes — jackie @ 1:49 pm

Good afternoon readers…

It’s getting close to that time when little ghoulish creatures run around in the street and knock on your door begging for sweets.

If you’re one of those folks that really gets into the spirit of halloween why not consider surface carving your pumpkin instead of the traditional hollow carving. Lee Valley tools has a tutorial with some tips on surface carving your pumpkins here.

The DIY Network has a group of video tutorials on pumpkin carving, sculpting and painting.

Watch this video podcast from Make Magazine and learn how to make cool vampire fangs.

Obligitory food content (For Clara :o )…last night I made some quick apple turnovers using filo dough for the crust. Basically I took about four layers of dough and brushed them with butter. Added about a cup of peeled apples that had been mixed with lemon juice as well as sugar and cinnamon to tase. Then folded over the dough and brushed a little butter on top and then sprinkled it with a little sugar. 20 mins in the oven at about 400 degrees. They were good and made a light evening snack to go perfectly with a cup of coffee or tea. Easy enough that even a non baker can make them.

In the not too distant future I really want to make these peach turnovers and these rolls. Oh and this cake. Anybody have a birthday coming up soon?

Of note in the bookbinding world…

Here is a nice little tutorial on making a post and screw bound album from the Alternativephotography.com site.

I hope everyone has a great day.

Baking in hopes of fall…

Filed under: Morning Musings, Recipes — jackie @ 8:52 am

Good morning readers…

This morning I watched a thick fog roll in. It’s been a while since we’ve had one. I’m happy not to have to be on the road to a class this morning. The neighborhood freeloader ducks came by for breakfast also. My place is a couple of blocks from the lake so it’s like that little diner that sits on the outskirts of town that seems to be open all the time and serves a great meal. They come, they eat and then they waddle away.

I have been harboring a sinus infection in my head for several days now and I am ready for it to move on. I’ve been doing things to help it pack like tons of vitamin C, Ibuprofen and Zircam tablets but it is a stuborn squatter. :(

I’m prepping for a class at Jerry’s this afternoon. I’m glad to have finally gotten a few new students interested.

Ok…show of hands…who now owns a Workmate?

I’m fighting the recession of fall with baked goods. Thank goodness for AC. Means I can crank up the oven and still be comfortable. So far this weekend I’ve baked a Blueberry Buttermilk Bundt cake, pizza and this morning I’ll be baking buttermilk biscuits with country ham. (email me for the recipe) This afternoon I’ll be putting on a big pot of homemade chicken noodle soup in hopes that it will help drive away the sinus infection. It’s my friend’s mother’s recipe.

A couple more Flickr sites for inspiration (for Cris :) )…

Aya Yoshida

Jo36 Some nice calligraphy work here also

Jenni Gunter also check out her website. I love her linoleum block printed book covers.

I hope everyone has a great day.
