Good morning readers.

Yesterday we hit a milestone on this little site. We went over the 5000 visitor mark for the month of March!

A big thank you to all my regular readers as well as all the new folks that happen along. It’s nice to know that there are folks out there that “listen” to my morning ramblings. :o

This is the last week of drawing for the prizes. We have a weekly drawing on Friday as well as a final grand prize drawing on Sat. where some lucky person is going to win a copy of Keith Smith’s book Bookbinding For Book Artists and a few other surprises. So, don’t miss out. Get your name in the jar.

More summer educational opportunities.

The Shakerag Workshops in Sewanee, Tn. is offering a course by Dolph Smith titled Books On The Move June 10-16, 2007. From the description “The early emphasis in this class will be on developing a clear understanding of traditional multi-sectioned book binding. During the week the emphasis will shift to thinking of the book as a small kinetic sculpture.”

The Wells Book Arts Summer Institute at Wells College in Aurora, NY has some interesting classes available this summer. From the site “For its third annual summer institute, the Wells Book Arts Center is offering an extraordinary opportunity to learn from some of the nation’s most important figures in the book arts. Our intensive, hands-on courses in letterpress printing, bookbinding and lettering arts are taught by remarkable instructors in Wells’ historic setting of lyric beauty. We invite you to become part of this new tradition on the shores of Cayuga Lake, in New York’s Finger Lakes region.”

Not about making books but book related…

8th Annual Pacific Northwest Children’s Book Conference at the Portland State University in Portland, Oregon July 9-13, 2007. From the site “Join us this summer for an inspiring week as we focus on the craft of writing and illustrating for children and young adults.”

Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. There are weekly workshops June - July, 2007 From the site “Rare Book School (RBS) is an independent non-profit educational institute supporting the study of the history of books and printing and related subjects. Founded in 1983, it moved to its present home at the University of Virginia in 1992.”

If anyone has any classes or workshops you are teaching or you know of any coming up please feel free to post about them over on the Book Arts Forum in the Education Opportunities board.

Big Announcement Wednesday!

Filed under: Announcements — jackie @ 6:48 am

Good morning readers!

I’ve been a bit AWOL from the site here for the past couple of days. It’s because I’ve been working on a very special project that I’m really excited about.

Without further adieu I’d like to introduce to you the Book Arts Forum. The Book Arts Forum is a newly established online meeting place for anyone interested in the book and paper arts. Membership to the forum is free. You just need to register to post to the private forums. There are message boards for general bookbinding, restoration, papermaking, tips and techniques as well as a general chat area for off topic posts. There is an area to post upcoming workshops and classes, a buy/sell area and a vendor area.

It’s a really quiet over there right now because it’s brand new but don’t let that discourage you from going over and saying hi. And keep checking back as I’m hoping that the forum will be a busy place in the near future.

In other news I’m working on a few new tutorials and am hoping to have them up soon.

Don’t forget to get your name in the jar for this weeks drawing on Friday. I’ve got another cool little gift to give away.

Week 2 winner

Congratulations to Joanne B Kaar. Joanne uploaded some cool photos to the Flickr site of her handmade books and paper. She will receive a fun little gift to play with in her bookarts endeavors. I’ll post photos once she gets her package as I don’t want to spoil the surprise.

If you didn’t win this week your name will stay in the jar for next Fridays drawing. If you post another comment this week or a photo of your books over on the Flickr site you will get your name put in the jar again giving you more chances to win. You still have two more chances to win the weekly drawing and everyone gets a chance to win the grand prize at the end of the month.

One more day…

Filed under: Announcements — jackie @ 9:58 am

Good morning dear readers. Just one more day to go until the kickoff of our month long anniversary celebration.

So…yesterday I mentioned that I would be giving out more details this morning. Here they are.

One of the features I hope to bring you every week is a special interview with someone prominent in the field of bookarts or binding. I am pleased to announce that for our kickoff tomm. I have a wonderful interview with book artist Keith Smith of non adhesive sewing fame.

Also, on Friday of each week starting March 9, I will be giving away a prize as well as a grand prize on March 31. All prizes will be bookarts related. To be entered in the weekly prize drawings, starting tomm., all you need to do is either send me an email ( jackie@tjbookarts dot com), comment on a post or post a photo of one of your handmade books on the flickr site. Your name will stay in the pot all month so, even if you don’t win a Friday prize you still have a chance to win the grand prize. Good luck.

I’ll leave you today with a little eye candy. This little album is a sample for the Japanese style album making class that I am offering.

A little editing…

Filed under: Announcements — jackie @ 2:15 pm

I’ve done a little editing the page on Preparing Fabric for Book Covers. (See the page link on the side) I’ve added some updated information and photos as well as links to supplies and some sites that also have good information on preparing fabric to be used for book covers.

Tomm. I will be busy preparing for the kick off on Thursday to our month long anniversary celebration. Each week I’ll have a special feature as well as a weekly prize drawing. I’ll post all the pertinent information by tomm. evening.

Stay tuned.

Site milestones!

Filed under: Announcements — jackie @ 7:24 am

Good morning all.

I’m happy to announce as of yesterday there have been over a thousand visitors during the month of February to the site. When I put this site up in March of 2006 we only had about 80 visitors for the whole month. That’s awesome as it means folks are finally finding out that we are here.

That brings me to another little announcement. This little site turns one year old in March. To celebrate, starting March 1st, we will have special features, weekly prize drawings and an end of the month grand prize drawing.  Stay tuned for more information as March draws nearer.

ps…if you’re wondering why the archives only go back to Sept. 2006 it’s because that’s when I changed the format of this site from a simple little html site to a blog format.
